Principal Software Engineer (Backend)

Location: Fully remote within the United States; candidates near hirify.global offices in Columbia, MD, San Antonio, TX, Boise, ID, Greenville, SC, or Augusta, GA may be required to work from the office periodically.

Salary: $143,507–$245,000 per year.

What you will do

• Design, develop, test, deploy, and maintain scalable backend systems handling massive data volumes and high query loads.
• Build and evolve RESTful APIs and backend services.
• Modify, extend, and optimize complex open-source systems such as Trino.
• Implement identity federation solutions and operate large-scale data ingestion pipelines using tools such as Keycloak and Airflow.
• Automate deployment processes and CI/CD workflows using Kubernetes and related technologies.
• Own technical projects from concept through production, diagnose complex issues, and improve system reliability and performance.

Requirements

• U.S. citizenship is required. A current U.S. Government Security Clearance is desired but not required.
• 15+ years of software engineering experience with a related bachelor's degree, or equivalent experience with a master's degree or high school diploma.
• Proficiency in Java, Python, or Go, with significant experience building backend services and API endpoints.
• Experience modifying Trino or similar distributed SQL query engines, plus containerization and orchestration with Kubernetes.
• Experience with PostgreSQL or similar relational databases, identity federation protocols, deployment automation, and CI/CD.
• Strong problem-solving, communication, adaptability, collaboration, and independent ownership skills.

Nice to have

• Hands-on Keycloak experience for identity and access management.
• Experience with Airflow, Prometheus, and AWS services such as S3, EC2, KMS, or Bedrock.
• Exposure to or interest in GCP or Azure.
• Current Secret or TS security clearance.
