Software Engineer (Hybrid) (Java/AI)

Location: Hybrid, with an average of 2–3 full-time days per week at the Columbia, MD office or Ft. Meade onsite. U.S. citizenship is required; a current U.S. Government security clearance is not required on day one but will be processed.

Salary: $137,510–$190,000 per year.

What you will do

• Design, develop, and implement complex Java software capabilities for computer-based systems.
• Design enterprise APIs and develop RESTful web services and microservice architectures.
• Integrate advanced AI coding agents, including Claude Code or Gemini-based agentic workflows, into daily engineering work.
• Use autonomous agents for multi-file feature implementation, complex codebase refactoring, and automated unit and integration test generation.
• Guide agents through complex multi-repository architectures and audit generated code for security, performance, and architectural alignment.
• Collaborate with engineers in a fast-paced small-business environment while troubleshooting issues and meeting multiple deadlines.

Requirements

• U.S. citizenship is required. A current U.S. Government security clearance is not required on day one, but one will be processed; candidates with current Secret or TS clearance may also be considered.
• At least 9 years of software engineering experience, including modern Java frameworks and libraries such as Spring or Guava, plus a bachelor’s degree in a related field; or 7 years of relevant experience with a master’s degree; or a high school diploma or equivalent and 13 years of relevant experience.
• Strong working knowledge and experience developing Java-based software capabilities.
• Experience designing enterprise APIs, developing RESTful web services, and working with microservices architecture.
• Experience with object-oriented programming paradigms, the Agile software lifecycle, Linux, and configuration management tools such as Git, Nexus, or Maven.
• Proven experience integrating advanced AI agents, specifically Claude Code or Google’s Antigravity/Gemini agentic workflows, into daily software engineering work.
• Experience using autonomous agents for multi-file feature implementation, complex refactoring, and automated generation of robust unit and integration tests.
• Ability to manage context across complex, multi-repository application architectures and critically audit AI-generated code for security, performance, and architectural alignment.
• Inquisitive nature, responsiveness, excellent testing and troubleshooting skills, ability to work under pressure with multiple deadlines, and ability to learn quickly and work independently and collaboratively.
• Ability to work in the required hybrid environment and adapt to schedule changes.

Nice to have

• Current U.S. Government security clearance.
• Experience with cloud technologies such as AWS or Azure.
• Experience using Claude Code or Gemini in daily engineering workflows, including agentic feature delivery, refactoring, and automated testing.
• Experience with distributed databases, NoSQL databases, or full-text search engines such as Elasticsearch, MongoDB, or Solr.
• Scripting experience.
• Familiarity with Big Data Platform/JCRS-D and data lakes or data warehouses.
• Understanding of Agile software development methodologies and standard tools such as JIRA, Confluence, or GitHub Enterprise.
• DoD 8140/8570 IAT Level II compliance certifications, which may be required as directed by the customer.
