Software Engineer (Hybrid) - 29023 (Java/AI)

Location: Hybrid, with 2–3 full-time days per week at the Columbia, Maryland office or Ft. Meade onsite; U.S. citizenship required.

Salary: $137,510–$190,000 per year

What you will do

• Design, develop, and implement complex Java software capabilities for computer-based systems.
• Build enterprise APIs, RESTful web services, and microservices-based solutions.
• Integrate AI coding agents such as Claude Code and Gemini into daily engineering workflows.
• Use autonomous agents for multi-file feature development, codebase refactoring, and automated unit and integration test generation.
• Manage context across multi-repository architectures and audit generated code for security, performance, and architectural alignment.
• Collaborate with engineers in a fast-paced small-business environment while troubleshooting issues and meeting multiple deadlines.

Requirements

• 9+ years of software engineering experience with modern Java frameworks and libraries, plus a related bachelor's degree; alternative experience and education combinations are accepted.
• Experience with enterprise APIs, RESTful web services, microservices, object-oriented programming, and the agile software lifecycle.
• Strong testing, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to work independently and collaboratively.
• Experience with Linux and configuration management tools such as Git, Nexus, and Maven.
• U.S. citizenship is required; a current U.S. Government security clearance is not required on day one but will be processed.
• Must work in a hybrid environment for an average of 2–3 full-time days per week at the Columbia, MD office or Ft. Meade onsite.

Nice to have

• Current U.S. Government Secret or TS clearance.
• Cloud experience with AWS or Azure.
• Experience with Claude Code, Gemini, or other autonomous AI coding workflows.
• Experience with distributed or NoSQL databases and search engines such as Elasticsearch, MongoDB, or Solr.
• Big Data Platform, data lake or data warehouse experience; scripting and DoD 8140/8570 IAT Level II certifications are also valued.
