Director, Data Science

Location: Remote within the United States; fully remote with no regular in-office requirement, though periodic travel to offices for team meetings and events may be required.

Salary: $175,000–$210,000 per year, plus potential bonuses and short- and long-term incentives.

What you will do

• Lead and grow a data science team focused on customer intelligence, predictive modeling, and personalization.
• Develop customer lifetime value, segmentation, retention, acquisition, engagement, and lifecycle models.
• Analyze customer behavior across mobile apps, web, social media, email, and newsletters, including product funnels, feature adoption, and session behavior.
• Partner with Product, Marketing, Editorial, Data Operations, and Engineering to turn behavioral insights into recommendations and differentiated experiences.
• Design online A/B tests and advanced experiments to measure product, personalization, and marketing interventions.
• Align data science initiatives with company objectives and advocate for the resources and tools needed to scale data capabilities.

Requirements

• PhD, advanced degree, or equivalent experience in Data Science, Economics, Business Analytics, Mathematics, Statistics, or a related quantitative field.
• 7+ years of experience in data science and machine learning, including customer behavior, product analytics, and marketing-focused problems.
• 5+ years of experience leading a team of data scientists.
• Strong proficiency in Python and SQL, with a foundation in causal inference, survival analysis, and time series analysis.
• Experience leading product and funnel analytics on web and mobile platforms and communicating complex analyses to non-technical stakeholders.
• Familiarity with Claude Code/Codex and their reliable use and limitations in data science workflows.

Nice to have

• Experience with large-scale search and recommendation systems in media, e-commerce, or advertising.
• Experience with large-scale analytics platforms such as BigQuery.
• Exposure to reinforcement learning, bandit approaches, Bayesian methods, forecasting, retention modeling, or advanced experimentation techniques such as CUPED.
• Applied NLP experience in content classification, semantic search, or audience understanding.
• Experience leading end-to-end data science projects from problem framing through deployment and impact measurement.
