TL;DR
Senior Controls Engineer (Automotive): Leading controls engineering for vehicle assembly manufacturing systems with an accent on PLCs, robotics, industrial networks, capital projects, and plant reliability. Focus on troubleshooting complex automated systems, driving new model launches and throughput improvements, and coordinating cross-functional engineering and supplier execution.

Location: Onsite in Orion, Michigan, United States; full-time onsite presence required. The role may be eligible for relocation benefits.

What you will do

  • Lead controls engineering strategy and execution for vehicle assembly manufacturing systems.
  • Serve as the technical authority for PLC, robotics, and industrial network architecture standards.
  • Manage electrical and controls projects, including installations, upgrades, model changes, throughput improvements, and lifecycle replacements.
  • Lead root cause analysis, complex equipment failure resolution, continuous improvement, and data-driven decision-making.
  • Coordinate new model planning, equipment validation, suppliers, contractors, corporate engineering, and plant operations.
  • Support capital planning, reliability, maintainability, energy efficiency, safety, training, and operational cost reduction.

Requirements

  • Advanced programming, optimization, and troubleshooting experience with Rockwell/Allen-Bradley ControlLogix platforms.
  • Advanced troubleshooting and programming experience with FANUC robotics.
  • Expert ability to read, interpret, and modify electrical schematics and controls documentation.
  • Advanced knowledge of DeviceNet, ControlNet, and Ethernet/IP industrial networks.
  • Strong analytical, structured problem-solving, leadership, communication, and mentoring skills.
  • Willingness to work any shift and support off-shift production, shutdowns, launches, weekends, and extended hours when required.

Nice to have

  • 5+ years of experience in automotive vehicle assembly manufacturing.
  • Experience leading automation strategy or large capital projects.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent technical experience.
  • Experience with MES, SCADA, data acquisition systems, and manufacturing software integration.
  • Mentoring or supervisory experience over engineering or technical teams.
