Senior Kafka Developer (Java/Kafka)

Location: Remote or hybrid in the United States; preferably Boston, MA, with the listed location in Louisville, KY. Occasional travel to hirify.global offices may be required.

Salary: $106,900–$147,000 per year, plus eligibility for a bonus incentive plan.

What you will do

• Design, build, and own Kafka producers, consumers, topics, and event-streaming strategies.
• Integrate the Java/Drools rules engine with upstream and downstream systems through event and API contracts.
• Build and maintain Java backend services that produce and consume platform events.
• Engineer reliable streaming behavior, including partitioning, ordering, idempotency, retries, delivery semantics, and dead-letter handling.
• Profile and tune throughput and latency as event volumes grow.
• Implement logging, metrics, alerting, testing, code reviews, and security practices for systems handling member PHI.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in computer science or a related field.
• 5+ years of backend software engineering experience, including production work with Apache Kafka or Confluent.
• Strong Java skills and experience designing event-driven services.
• Deep knowledge of Kafka internals, including partitioning, consumer groups, offsets, ordering, and delivery semantics.
• Experience with distributed-systems fundamentals, cloud infrastructure such as Azure, containers or Kubernetes, and CI/CD.
• Remote or hybrid work is available in the United States, preferably from Boston, MA; occasional office travel may be required.

Nice to have

• Experience with Drools or another business rules management system.
• Familiarity with Kafka Streams, schema registry, and Avro or Protobuf.
• Experience with stream-processing patterns and real-time data pipelines.
• Background in healthcare, insurance, or another regulated industry involving PHI.
