Senior Automation Software Engineer (f/m/d)

Location: Freiburg im Breisgau, Germany; occasional travel within Germany and internationally is required for projects and commissioning.

What you will do

• Develop and maintain Siemens PLC applications, reusable function blocks, and standardized control architectures for production equipment.
• Design workflow-driven process automation, recipe management, and orchestration systems using Node-RED or similar platforms.
• Integrate instrumentation, machinery, industrial networks, SCADA, and MES systems into scalable automation environments.
• Develop industrial software applications, APIs, HMIs, dashboards, and analytics tools.
• Translate process requirements into robust automation solutions with process engineers and cross-functional stakeholders.
• Support equipment commissioning, troubleshooting, and optimization to ensure stable and efficient production.

Requirements

• Master’s degree in Automation Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Mechatronics, Software Engineering, or a comparable field.
• At least five years of PLC programming experience, including TIA Portal and Structured Text.
• Experience with industrial automation, machine control systems, commissioning, and industrial communication technologies such as OPC UA, Profinet, Modbus TCP, MQTT, or REST APIs.
• Proficiency in at least one modern programming language, such as C#, Python, JavaScript, or C++.
• Experience with Node-RED or workflow and process orchestration platforms, industrial data systems, visualization tools, and advanced analytics.
• Fluent English, written and spoken, is required. Strong analytical, problem-solving, communication, and collaboration skills are expected.

Nice to have

• German language skills.
• Experience with Grafana, web technologies, React, Angular, Git, and modern software development practices.
