Senior Mechanical Engineer – Cable Magnets

Location: Hybrid in Devens, Massachusetts, United States; occasional travel, nights, weekends, and on-call work may be required. The role involves working in a facility with industrial hazards, including heat, cold, noise, fumes, strong magnets, lead, high voltage, high current, pressure systems, and cryogenics.

Salary: $134,000–$205,000 per year, plus equity and benefits.

What you will do

• Own cable magnet hardware for SPARC, ARC, or other projects from early concepts through design validation, procurement, production, assembly, installation, and on-time delivery.
• Develop and iterate mechanical designs using physics, structural mechanics, and analysis techniques for metallic and composite materials.
• Perform thermal, structural, and electromagnetic analysis and prepare design notes, technical specifications, reports, presentations, and validation documentation.
• Collaborate with R&D, analysis, manufacturing, procurement, production, and assembly teams to achieve program milestones and support manufacturing contracts.
• Diagnose production and assembly issues, determine root causes, and implement design solutions and design-for-manufacturing or assembly changes.
• Mentor junior engineers and help establish and implement engineering best practices.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, or another relevant field.
• At least 7 years of engineering design and analysis experience, including at least 2 years supporting production hardware by resolving technical issues and implementing design-for-manufacturing or assembly changes.
• Hands-on experience designing parts for high loads and/or extreme environments.
• Excellent fundamental knowledge of mechanical systems, including static structures and heat transfer.
• Familiarity with all steps of the design process, with emphasis on creativity, simplicity, and execution.
• Self-motivated, committed to self-growth, and able to demonstrate excellent problem-solving skills.
• CAD proficiency.
• FEA experience.
• Ability to sit for extended periods and work in the specified industrial-hazard environment.

Nice to have

• NX CAD experience; other CAD tools are acceptable.
• ANSYS and COMSOL experience.
• Expertise in ASME Y14 GD&T principles.
• Experience designing mechanical components beyond desktop scale, including high-power, high-mass, or high-force systems.
• Experience in production or heavy equipment assembly environments.
• Design experience with electromagnets, vacuum systems, welding, composite materials, radiation environments, or cryogenic environments.
