Senior Mechanical Engineer - Assembly Equipment

Location: Devens, Massachusetts, United States; on-site. On-site work is required 5 days per week when assembly operations with relevant tools are underway, with possible first- or second-shift assignments.

Salary: $110,000–$185,000 per year.

What you will do

• Own the design and engineering development of tooling, lifting equipment, manipulation systems, and support frames for moving and integrating SPARC components.
• Develop assembly strategies, logic, methods, and work plans in coordination with system teams.
• Analyze tool structures and kinematics to verify safe movement, support, access, and interference control.
• Support precision alignment plans for magnets and vessels and design fixtures for accurate placement.
• Oversee fabrication at external vendor shops, troubleshoot production issues, and procure required hardware.
• Create work-instruction packets and lead on-site assembly, proofing, and activation of assigned tools.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Civil, Mechanical, or Aerospace Engineering.
• 7+ years of mechanical engineering experience with demonstrated project ownership.
• 4+ years overseeing construction, manufacturing, or assembly/integration processes.
• 4+ years of experience with CAD software.
• Ability to work on-site 5 days per week during relevant assembly operations.
• Ability to work around industrial hazards including heat, cold, noise, fumes, strong magnets, lead, high voltage, high current, pressure systems, and cryogenics.

Nice to have

• 3+ years of experience with Siemens NX.
• Experience with lifting operations, welding, piping and tubing construction, or large-structure manipulation.
• Experience with complex or delicate assemblies and tightly packaged spaces.
• Experience designing sizeable alignment and positioning fixtures.
