TL;DR
Senior Perception Hardware Engineer (Robotics): Designing sensor calibration hardware, algorithms, and factory processes for Apollo's multimodal perception system with an accent on optical modeling, spatial transformations, and precision synchronization. Focus on building automated end-of-line calibration, developing in-field self-calibration routines, and monitoring fleet-wide sensor health.

Location: Austin, TX, United States

Company

hirify.global develops AI-powered humanoid robots, including Apollo, for applications in manufacturing, logistics, healthcare, and home environments.

What you will do

  • Define intrinsic models for optical and inertial sensors, including camera distortion and IMU error models.
  • Develop accurate sensor-to-sensor and sensor-to-kinematic-base extrinsic calibration.
  • Validate hardware-level timing and sub-microsecond synchronization using PTP, PPS, and hardware triggering.
  • Design calibration fixtures, targets, and lighting environments, and validate sensor mounting stability under thermal, mechanical, and lifecycle effects.
  • Build automated end-of-line calibration for multi-sensor humanoid heads and develop in-field self-calibration routines.
  • Establish calibration data tracking and analytics to monitor fleet health, batch variance, and hardware degradation.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of industry experience in perception hardware, computer vision, or robotics, focused on sensor calibration and validation.
  • Deep knowledge of 3D geometry, linear algebra, coordinate transformations, quaternions, rotation matrices, SE(3), and nonlinear optimization.
  • Strong Python and C++ programming skills with experience using OpenCV, PCL, Ceres Solver, or g2o.
  • Hands-on experience with optical components, LiDAR mechanisms, and MEMS IMUs, including optical distortion, rolling shutter artifacts, and IMU drift.
  • Ability to translate autonomy requirements into hardware and calibration tolerances.
  • MS or PhD in Robotics, Electrical Engineering, Optical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical field.

Culture & Benefits

  • Direct-hire position.
  • Work focuses on bringing the Apollo humanoid robot to market at scale.
  • Physical requirements include extended desk and computer work, occasional lifting of up to 15 pounds, and the ability to communicate verbally and visually.
