TL;DR
Senior Mechatronics and Control Engineer (Robotics): Rapidly prototyping robotic automation systems that combine mechanisms, sensors, perception, motion planning, controls, and software integration with an accent on CAD, hands-on fabrication, and ROS-based development. Focus on integrating robot arms and automation equipment, debugging incomplete systems across mechanical and software boundaries, and validating prototype performance through experiments.

Location: Bedford, Massachusetts, United States. Occasional travel to customers, up to 10%.

What you will do

  • Own rapid prototyping of robotic automation systems from concept and CAD through prototype build, integration, testing, and iteration.
  • Translate operational and customer needs into system requirements, prototype architectures, and engineering plans.
  • Design and fabricate mechanisms, end effectors, fixtures, and automation subsystems.
  • Integrate robot arms, sensors, perception systems, motion planning software, controls, and automation equipment.
  • Develop and debug Python, C++, and ROS/ROS2 software for prototype behavior, data collection, and validation.
  • Bring up and troubleshoot incomplete systems across mechanical, electrical, controls, and software boundaries while working with suppliers and engineering partners.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in mechanical engineering, robotics, computer science, mechatronics, computer engineering, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Generalist experience across mechanical design, prototyping, software integration, robot bring-up, and system-level debugging.
  • Proficiency with 3D CAD, preferably SolidWorks, plus hands-on prototyping with shop tools, 3D printing, and basic fabrication.
  • Working knowledge of Python and C++ and experience with ROS or ROS2-based robot integration.
  • Experience integrating robot arms, end effectors, sensors, actuators, perception systems, motion planning, and robot trajectories.
  • Ability to make progress with incomplete requirements, identify technical risks, set milestones, and communicate engineering tradeoffs.

Nice to have

  • Six or more years of relevant experience in robotics, automation, mechatronics, or related systems.
  • Experience with PLCs, industrial automation controls, motion control, servo tuning, PCB or electrical design, wiring, and harnesses.
  • Experience developing automation for industrial, warehouse, food-handling, or customer-facing environments.
  • Experience designing and running experiments to validate prototype performance.
