TL;DR
Hardware Test Engineer – Dexterity (Robotics): Developing and validating robotic hand hardware across mechanical, electrical, and system levels with an accent on test strategy, fixture design, instrumentation, and data analysis. Focus on assembling prototype test articles, designing benchtop setups, diagnosing failures, and feeding test results back into Dexterity hardware design.

What you will do

  • Define validation strategies and create structured test plans for robotic hand components, sub-assemblies, and systems.
  • Write test procedures with setup requirements, instrumentation, pass/fail criteria, data requirements, and traceability.
  • Assemble and configure prototype test articles and execute mechanical, electrical, and system-level tests.
  • Design and build custom test fixtures and benchtop setups for the Dexterity R&D program.
  • Analyze test data, document findings, diagnose failures, and provide design recommendations.
  • Collaborate with mechanical, electrical, firmware, and controls engineers on design reviews, testability, harnessing, and PLM documentation.

Requirements

  • Hands-on experience testing mechanical or electromechanical hardware, including instrumentation, data collection, and analysis.
  • Experience authoring structured test plans and designing or building test fixtures and benchtop setups.
  • Ability to read mechanical drawings, electrical schematics, and component datasheets.
  • Familiarity with force/torque sensors, encoders, data acquisition systems, and benchtop instruments.
  • Systematic debugging and root-cause analysis skills, experience working on multidisciplinary hardware teams, and Python competency for data processing.
  • BS in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Robotics, Mechatronics, or a related field with 3 years of relevant experience, or MS with 1 year; equivalent hands-on experience is also considered.

Nice to have

  • Experience with robotic hands, grippers, dexterous manipulation hardware, or electromechanical linear actuators.
  • Wire harnessing experience, including routing, connector selection, and strain relief.
  • Experience with PLM systems such as Arena, Windchill, or Teamcenter.
  • CAD experience with tools such as SolidWorks or Onshape.
  • Experience characterizing stiffness, backlash, friction, range of motion, force output, stroke, speed, or backdrivability.
