Backend Software Engineer (Defense)

Location: Washington, D.C.; on-site work required

Salary: $135,000–$200,000 per year, plus potential restricted stock units, sign-on bonus, and other incentives.

What you will do

• Architect, develop, maintain, and optimize high-performance backend services supporting operational data and AI systems.
• Build robust APIs for frontend applications and external system integrations.
• Design efficient data structures and algorithms for large-scale, high-throughput data.
• Develop distributed systems and real-time collaborative tools for defense workflows, including geospatial and data-analysis solutions.
• Collaborate with technical and non-technical partners to improve user workflows and deliver cohesive product capabilities.
• Maintain engineering quality through code reviews, development guidelines, and continuous improvement.

Requirements

• Experience designing, developing, supporting, and maintaining live backend systems.
• In-depth knowledge of data structures, system architecture, API development for microservices, distributed systems, and backend best practices.
• Strong coding skills in Java, C++, Python, Rust, or similar languages.
• Background in Computer Science, Mathematics, Software Engineering, Physics, or a related field.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills and the ability to iterate quickly with teammates.
• Eligibility and willingness to obtain a US Security clearance.
