Director of Data Engineering & Platform (Databricks)

Location: San Francisco, United States

Annual salary: $260,000–$320,000, depending on geographic location, experience, and skillset.

What you will do

• Lead and develop the Data Engineering and Platform & Operations functions, including permanent, contract, and transitional resources.
• Own technical delivery of the Northstar Lakehouse across Bronze, Silver, and Gold layers using Databricks on AWS, medallion architecture, Data Vault 2.0, and 3NF relational modeling.
• Establish gold-layer data products for legal intelligence, AI-powered legal products, financial reporting, billing analytics, and operational dashboards.
• Own Databricks architecture, including Unity Catalog, compute tiers, job clusters, SQL warehouses, Delta Lake standards, workspace organization, and platform security.
• Oversee CI/CD, pipeline monitoring, incident management, data ingestion integrations, and platform reliability.
• Coordinate infrastructure dependencies and delivery standards with Technology, Governance & Quality, Data Products, Intelligence & Client Services, and Data Domain Squads.

Requirements

• 10+ years of experience in data engineering, data platform architecture, or enterprise solution architecture, including 5+ years of relevant management experience.
• Experience building a greenfield cloud data platform with medallion architecture, Data Vault 2.0, pipeline frameworks, and gold-layer consumption patterns.
• Deep enterprise-scale Databricks expertise, including Unity Catalog, Delta Lake, Databricks SQL, job cluster architecture, compute strategy, workspace organization, and platform administration.
• Experience leading cross-functional infrastructure relationships involving networks, gateways, VMs, cloud connectivity, and enterprise technology functions.
• Proven Agile delivery leadership across multiple data-domain workstreams, including sprint planning, EPIC delivery, and definition-of-done discipline.
• Bachelor’s degree, strong leadership and communication skills, GitHub proficiency, ability to travel as required, and availability for extended or weekend hours when needed.

Nice to have

• Legal, professional services, or financial services experience.
• Experience with 3NF relational modeling, dbt, Qlik Replicate, AWS DMS, Informatica MDM, DQE, Terraform, or AWS CloudFormation.
• Experience with AI-assisted development tools and data platforms supporting RAG pipelines, LLM fine-tuning datasets, or vector search indexes.
