Director of Forward Deployed Engineering (Healthcare AI)

Location: United States - Remote; Illinois - Remote

Salary: $185,000–$225,000 per year, plus equity and benefits.

What you will do

• Own end-to-end data integrations for 2–4 health system partners from onboarding through production operations.
• Lead and develop a pod of 2–3 Forward Deployed Engineers while delivering initial rollouts in under 90 days.
• Act as the primary technical relationship owner for partner data and IT teams, including CTO- and CMIO-level communication.
• Design and build pipelines ingesting Epic Clarity data, transforming it through FHIR, and delivering AI-ready datasets through Delta Lake and Delta Sharing.
• Collaborate with Product, AI Engineering, and Data Science on workflow data requirements, prototyping, backtesting, inference, and evaluation.
• Improve integration patterns, tooling, standards, validation frameworks, monitoring, and reusable deployment components.

Requirements

• 7+ years of experience as a data engineer or engineering leader, including production pipelines, technical leadership, and end-to-end client ownership.
• Strong expertise with Epic Clarity/Caboodle data models and healthcare data integration.
• Proficiency with Databricks, PySpark, Delta Lake, SQL Server, and Azure services including ADLS, Key Vault, and ADF.
• Experience with FHIR/HL7 interoperability standards, data transformation, validation, and monitoring.
• Executive-level client communication, consultant mindset, independent critical thinking, and ownership of delivery quality.
• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Data Science, Mathematics, or a related technical field.

Nice to have

• Experience with healthcare data from multiple EHR vendors, including Cerner, eCW, athenahealth, or NextGen.
• Terraform or other infrastructure-as-code experience for tenant provisioning.
• Healthcare consulting, EHR implementation, forward deployment, or health system IT experience.
• Experience with real-time HL7/FHIR feeds, subscriptions, or streaming pipelines.
• Familiarity with AI-assisted development tools such as GitHub Copilot or Cursor, and experience mentoring forward-deployed engineers or technical consultants.
