Senior Mechanical Engineer (Robotics)

Location: South San Francisco, United States; on-site. Travel to field sites is expected at approximately 15–25%.

What you will do

• Lead mechanical integration of robotic arms and heavy payloads onto skid-steers and tracked vehicle platforms.
• Design mounts, brackets, enclosures, actuators, end-effectors, harnesses, and cable assemblies for continuous outdoor construction use.
• Architect reconfigurable platforms supporting different end-effectors, payloads, and construction workflows.
• Own environmental design for IP67 enclosures, sealing, connectors, thermal management, and protection against dust, mud, rain, and snow.
• Run structural analysis and validation programs covering vibration, shock, thermal performance, ingress, and EMI.
• Coordinate with machine shops, sheet metal vendors, harness houses, and field teams while releasing drawings, managing ECOs, and diagnosing deployed-system failures.

Requirements

• 7+ years of mechanical engineering experience, including work at a robotics, autonomous systems, or heavy equipment company that deployed hardware in the field.
• Experience integrating robotic arms, actuators, or heavy payloads onto mobile platforms such as skid-steers, tracked vehicles, AGVs, or off-road equipment.
• Experience designing to IP67 or stricter standards and shipping systems for rain, snow, sub-zero cold, high heat, and dusty outdoor environments.
• Strong hands-on cabling and harness design experience, including connectors, harness diagrams, strain relief, chafe protection, and field debugging.
• Expertise with Onshape or SolidWorks, GD&T, tolerance stacks, production drawings, weldments, bearings, hand calculations, and FEA.
• Ability to work on-site in South San Francisco and travel to active construction sites approximately 15–25%.

Nice to have

• Experience with construction, agricultural, mining, or defense ground vehicles.
• Experience designing platforms for multiple end-effectors, payloads, or task configurations.
• Experience integrating cameras, LiDAR, IMUs, lighting, hydraulics, pneumatics, or high-current DC power systems.
• Experience managing suppliers for castings, weldments, or large machined parts.
• Experience with systems deployed in desert Southwest or northern-climate conditions.
