Engineering Director (PHP/Symfony)

What you will do

• Lead a significant part of the Product Development organization and partner with Product, Analytics, Operations, and Warehouse Engineering leadership.
• Translate company strategy into team roadmaps, OKRs, priorities, and measurable engineering outcomes.
• Manage multiple engineering teams and managers, owning delivery, quality, hiring, headcount planning, performance, compensation calibration, and team development.
• Own production reliability, incident response, postmortems, observability, testing discipline, and engineering standards.
• Drive business-oriented investment decisions, including roadmap sequencing, scope reduction, resource allocation, and monolith-decomposition initiatives.
• Advance AI-assisted development and internal engineering tooling while communicating decisions clearly in writing and across functions.

Requirements

• 8+ years of professional software development experience, including at least 4 years in engineering leadership at Manager, Senior Manager, Director, or higher level.
• Experience managing managers and running multiple teams, typically totaling 25–60 engineers.
• Demonstrated ownership of delivery and improvement of throughput, quality, retention, or business impact in an engineering organization.
• Hands-on experience hiring senior engineers and managers, developing leaders, and making headcount and performance decisions.
• Credibility with modern backend and web engineering practices, Git, CI/CD, observability, incident response, and architecture discussions.
• Strong written English required for async discussions, strategy documents, and cross-functional decisions.

Nice to have

• Experience in e-commerce, logistics, fulfillment, WMS, OMS, or software controlling physical operations in real time.
• Experience scaling engineering organizations through a scale-up-to-mature transition and formalizing career, performance, on-call, and incident practices.
• Familiarity with PHP, Symfony, Doctrine, MySQL, monorepos, or comparable mature monolith-plus-services environments.
• Experience with Strangler-Fig decomposition, AI-assisted development, distributed European teams, or public technical and leadership contributions.
• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field.
