General Counsel

Location: El Segundo, California, United States. Relocation assistance may be provided.

Base salary: $190,000–$250,000 per year, plus performance incentive, equity, and bonus.

What you will do

• Serve as the primary legal advisor across government contracts, commercial agreements, corporate governance, employment, intellectual property, and regulatory compliance.
• Own the export compliance program, including ITAR and EAR classification, licensing, and ongoing program management.
• Support government contracts throughout the procurement lifecycle, including proposals, awards, performance, and closeout, with FAR, DFARS, OTAs, and SBIRs.
• Partner with go-to-market and program teams on proposal strategy, contract structuring, and customer negotiations.
• Support fundraising and strategic transactions, manage outside counsel, and advise leadership on regulatory and policy developments.
• Advise on employment matters and sensitive HR situations.

Requirements

• J.D. from an accredited law school and active bar membership in at least one U.S. state.
• 8+ years of legal experience, including significant in-house work at a defense technology, aerospace, or government contracting company.
• Previous General Counsel or senior counsel experience with broad ownership of a company’s legal portfolio.
• Hands-on ITAR and EAR experience, including classification analysis, license applications, and compliance program management.
• Substantive government contracts experience with FAR/DFARS, contract vehicles, and data rights.
• Applicants must be U.S. citizens or nationals, lawful permanent residents, refugees, asylees, or eligible to obtain the required U.S. export authorizations.

Nice to have

• Experience building legal and compliance infrastructure at a venture-backed company.
• Familiarity with CMMC, CUI handling requirements, and information security frameworks relevant to Department of War contractors.
• Experience supporting Series A+ fundraising and M&A diligence.
• Active security clearance or eligibility and willingness to obtain one.
• Experience with OTAs and SBIRs, plus a strong interest in defense technology.
