TL;DR
Mechanical Engineer (Mechanisms) (Spacecraft Mechanisms): Designing and developing deployable solar panels, radiators, and other spacecraft mechanisms for space-based data centers with an accent on mechanical analysis, CAD iteration, testing, and reliability. Focus on conducting static, dynamic, thermal, and fatigue analysis, qualifying motor- and spring-driven mechanisms, and balancing manufacturability, cost, and design risk.
Location: Redmond, WA, United States. Must be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident, or eligible for authorization under U.S. export regulations.
Annual salary: $105,000–$140,000 for L1, $140,000–$190,000 for L2, and $170,000–$215,000 for L3.
Company
is building space-based data centers that use space-based energy, radiative cooling, and scalable infrastructure.
What you will do
- Design and develop spacecraft mechanisms, particularly deployable solar panels and radiators.
- Identify requirements, conduct trade studies, and apply first-principles engineering analysis to satellite mechanisms.
- Create and iterate CAD models covering mechanism architecture, materials, lubrication, assembly, and testing.
- Perform classical and FEA analysis for static, dynamic, thermal, and fatigue load conditions.
- Develop qualification and acceptance test plans and produce drawings, analysis reports, BOMs, and assembly documentation.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate mechanisms with the spacecraft while balancing cost, manufacturability, and design risk.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related field.
- At least 1 year of hands-on engineering experience with satellite or launch vehicle mechanisms.
- Experience designing and qualifying mechanisms driven by stepper or BLDC motors, springs, and HDRMs.
- Proficiency developing production and analysis models and drawings using CAD software.
- U.S. citizenship, lawful permanent residency, or eligibility for authorization under U.S. export regulations.
- Willingness to work extended hours and weekends when required for critical project milestones.
Nice to have
- Master’s or PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
- Technical project management experience.
- Expertise in materials selection for space applications.
- Experience with very large lightweight deployable structures.
- Proficiency with NX and Ansys.
Culture & Benefits
- Potential stock options, discretionary bonuses, and other long-term incentives.
- Medical, vision, and dental coverage.
- 401(k) retirement plan with company match.
