TL;DR
Principal Mechanical Engineer (Drones): Developing precision actuators, gimbals, flight hardware, and mechanical systems for safety-critical drone operations with an accent on kinematic design, motion control, lightweight mechanisms, and full lifecycle hardware development. Focus on designing and validating high-performance mechanisms, analyzing shock and vibration conditions, integrating motor drive systems, and guiding mechanical architecture through manufacturing.

Location: Seattle, WA; on-site

Salary: $147.8K–$245K plus equity

What you will do

  • Lead full lifecycle hardware development from specifications and concept design through prototyping, testing, validation, and manufacturing.
  • Design precision actuators, gimbals, flight hardware, test setups, and related mechanical systems for drone applications.
  • Establish design architectures and implementation methodologies, document analyses and test results, and make data-driven product decisions.
  • Collaborate with software, electrical, perception, controls, manufacturing, and industrial design engineers.
  • Ensure reliability, performance, and design intent in safety-critical drone operations.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to mechanical engineers.

Requirements

  • 8+ years of industry experience in mechanical engineering or product design, focused on mechanical systems and precision mechanisms.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
  • Experience with kinematics, dynamics, motion control, load analysis, linkages, gears, cams, and actuators.
  • Strong knowledge of DFM, DFA, DFT, statistical tolerance analysis, dimensioning, and GD&T.
  • Experience with 3D CAD, materials including plastics and metals, and manufacturing methods such as machining, stamping, injection molding, and 3D printing.
  • Experience developing mechanical solutions for UAV/UAS, aerospace, robotics, automotive, consumer electronics, or related applications.

Nice to have

  • 10+ years of experience designing mechanical solutions in aerospace, robotics, automotive, consumer electronics, or related industries.
  • Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
  • Experience with supply chain partners, electronics packaging, shock and vibration environments, failure analysis, and FEA.
  • Knowledge of DC, stepper, brushless, and servo motors, motor drives, PWM, PID, speed controllers, and feedback systems.
