Staff Software Engineer (Payroll)

Location: Remote within the United States, hybrid, or onsite in New York City or San Francisco

Salary: $228,000–$250,000 for remote US roles; $240,000–$264,000 for Tier 1 cities, plus equity

What you will do

• Design and build products that simplify complex payroll infrastructure for operators and partners.
• Own projects end-to-end, from problem identification and solution design through implementation, rollout, and iteration.
• Build internal and partner-facing tools for money movement visibility, reliability, and explainability.
• Partner with product, design, and operations to understand payroll workflows and solve operational challenges.
• Improve workflows, architecture, and tooling for developers and operators.
• Mentor teammates, provide thoughtful feedback, and raise the quality bar through clear technical communication.

Requirements

• Staff-level experience owning and delivering production systems from design through deployment and operation.
• Experience building internal tools, developer platforms, or product systems for complex operational workflows.
• Ability to structure ambiguous problems through thoughtful design and collaboration.
• Experience debugging complex systems across multiple services or infrastructure layers.
• Ability to explain technical tradeoffs to engineers and cross-functional partners.
• Experience with or willingness to learn Python/Django, React, TypeScript, AWS, Terraform, Postgres, Temporal, and GitHub.
