Staff Software Engineer (Python)

Location: Remote with primary residence in or near an approved city in the United States, Canada, or Mexico; occasional in-person attendance is required.

Salary: $141,000–$267,000 USD annually in the United States, $179,000–$228,500 CAD annually in Canada, plus equity and benefits.

What you will do

• Set technical direction for the Fable backend through technical design documents and architecture reviews.
• Build and evolve backend, infrastructure, and platform systems for a community of more than 1 million monthly active users.
• Own production reliability across staging, CI/CD, databases, queues, cost management, and observability.
• Lead incident response, run postmortems, and ensure corrective actions are completed.
• Partner with product, design, ML, and infrastructure teams to turn ambiguous product intent into durable backend systems.
• Raise engineering standards through code review, mentorship, pairing, testing, operations, and adoption of agentic engineering practices.

Requirements

• 10+ years of backend engineering experience, including substantial Python/Django experience and work with another backend stack such as Go, Node, Java, or Kotlin.
• Experience operating production systems on a major cloud platform, including databases at scale, container orchestration, queues, and CI/CD.
• Experience owning production incidents end to end and driving durable follow-through.
• Ability to write technical design documents and translate ambiguous product requirements into concrete backend designs.
• Strong collaboration with senior product, design, and ML stakeholders, alongside a pragmatic systems-oriented approach.
• Hands-on experience with agentic engineering tools and workflows in production.

Nice to have

• Experience with subscription and entitlement systems such as Stripe, RevenueCat, or app-store billing.
• Experience leading platform or infrastructure migrations, including on-premises to cloud, AWS to GCP, or monolith to services.
• Experience working with ML teams on recommendation or feed systems.
