TL;DR
Lead R&D Engineer (Quantum Computing): Developing enabling technologies, roadmaps, and subsystems for large-scale trapped-ion quantum computers with an accent on atomic physics, optics, lasers, photonic integrated circuits, and experimental hardware. Focus on architecting next-generation quantum computing systems, leading supplier development projects, and communicating technology trade studies and progress to technical and external stakeholders.
Location: On-site in Broomfield, Colorado, United States
Salary: $164,000–$205,000 annually, including the bonus target when applicable

What you will do
- Communicate the enabling technologies required for next-generation quantum computing systems and develop roadmaps to achieve them.
- Plan, prioritize, and advise on R&D paths for building future quantum computers.
- Architect, design, and develop quantum computer subsystems with cross-functional hardware, QEC/Theory, and applications teams.
- Track internal and external technology development and state-of-the-art results to update R&D plans.
- Lead development and design projects with suppliers.
- Communicate technology progress, trade studies, and design ideas to technical, leadership, and external stakeholders.
Requirements
- PhD degree required, either completed or obtained before the start date.
- At least 7 years of experience, including PhD study, in one or more of the following areas: qubits, atomic physics, optics, lasers, photonic integrated circuits, vacuum systems, electronics, or cryogenics.
- Must be a U.S. Person: U.S. citizen, permanent resident or green card holder, or worker granted asylum or refugee status.
- Due to U.S. Government national security requirements, candidates must not be a People's Republic of China national or Russian national unless also a U.S. citizen.
- Strong scientific communication, technical writing, organization, and collaboration skills.
- Safety-sensitive placement requires a pre-employment drug test.
Nice to have
- PhD in Physics, Optics, Engineering, or a related field.
- Experience leading R&D engineering efforts that mature low-TRL applied or experimental physics research into commercially viable products.
- Quantum computing experience focused on trapped-ion technologies.
