Process Safety Engineer (Manufacturing)

Location: Research Triangle Park, North Carolina; the role begins in Durham, North Carolina and is expected to move to Benson, North Carolina after completion of the new facility. Regular presence on the production floor is required.

What you will do

• Develop, implement, and continuously improve the site Process Safety Management program in accordance with OSHA 29 CFR 1910.119 and EPA RMP requirements.
• Manage PHA and revalidation, MOC, PSSR, operating procedures, mechanical integrity, incident investigation, contractor safety, emergency response, and related PSM elements.
• Facilitate HAZOPs, LOPA studies, and risk assessments, tracking findings through resolution.
• Act as the technical authority for process risk, safety standards, hazard controls, and Maximum Allowable Quantity requirements.
• Maintain hazardous-material inventories, monitor chemical storage and movement, and assess facility or equipment changes for MAQ impact.
• Lead audits, inspections, regulatory reviews, safety metrics, improvement projects, and process safety training.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in chemical, mechanical, industrial, or related engineering, or equivalent experience.
• 5+ years of experience in process safety management.
• Strong knowledge of OSHA PSM, EPA RMP, NFPA, API, MAQ requirements, and related industry standards.
• Experience conducting PHAs, including HAZOP, What-If, and FMEA, as well as risk assessments.
• Ability to lead cross-functional teams and influence without direct authority, supported by strong analytical, communication, and problem-solving skills.
• Must be a U.S. Person due to required access to U.S. export-controlled information or facilities. Regular production-floor presence, PPE use, respirator fit testing, and the ability to climb stairs and stand or walk for extended periods are required.

Nice to have

• PHA/LOPA leadership certification.
• Experience in chemical, petrochemical, pharmaceutical, or manufacturing environments.
• Knowledge of reliability engineering or mechanical integrity systems.
• Familiarity with software for PHA, incident investigation, and MOC workflows.
