Tooling Engineer (Aerospace)

Location: Los Angeles, CA, United States; Workplace: On-site. The role requires access to U.S. export-controlled information, so candidates must be a U.S. person or otherwise eligible for deemed export licensing.

Salary: $138,550–$187,450 per year

What you will do

• Design, fabricate, implement, and validate tooling, fixtures, integration aids, and ground support equipment for R&D, prototype builds, and test campaigns.
• Partner with structures, manufacturing, and test teams to define tooling requirements, integration flows, and process interfaces.
• Collaborate with engineering disciplines and external vendors to deliver high-precision prototype tooling.
• Use advanced materials and manufacturing methods, including additive and composite fabrication.
• Perform mechanical checks and hands-on trials, maintain configuration documentation and safety standards, and implement tooling upgrades.
• Coordinate schedules, priorities, and vendor relationships while resolving integration challenges between engineering and build teams.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in mechanical, aerospace, manufacturing, or a related engineering field.
• Strong engineering first-principles knowledge and hands-on experience with physical hardware.
• Ability to design, build, test, break, and iterate quickly.
• Comfort with CAD, test equipment, and hand tools.
• Familiarity with machining, welding, forming, and other manufacturing processes.
• Knowledge of GD&T fundamentals and engineering drawings.

Nice to have

• Experience with machining, additive manufacturing, composites, and rapid prototyping.
• Proficiency with CATIA, SolidWorks, or NX.
• Experience in R&D environments and design-build-test cycles for high-performance aerospace systems.
• Knowledge of lean prototyping and continuous improvement in low-volume experimental environments.
• Strong communication and problem-solving skills in ambiguous development settings.
