Field Mechanical Engineer - Assembly (Tokamak)

Location: Devens, Massachusetts, United States. On-site in the CFS-2 central construction hall, required 5 days per week when assembly operations with relevant tools are underway; possible alternating first or second shift assignment.

hirify.global Systems is building the SPARC Tokamak and developing its assembly process.

What you will do

• Co-own the assembly sequence for a workstation, initially focused on Toroidal Field Coil semicircle sub-assemblies, and determine changes that fit the overall SPARC assembly sequence.
• Define first-encounter work scopes, including installation of manifolds and magnet sub-assemblies.
• Resolve fit, method, component-handling, and other assembly issues with Tokamak System design teams while meeting functional requirements.
• Procure or build tools, fixtures, and manipulation equipment, then test, implement, and hand them off to production technicians.
• Provide manufacturing and assembly feedback in SPARC subsystem design reviews and support disposition of non-conformance issues and red-line sequence changes.
• Support hands-on Tokamak Assembly operations and collaborate with adjacent subsystem experts on high loads, vacuum requirements, and complex manipulation.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Civil, Mechanical, or Aerospace Engineering and 5 years of experience.
• At least 3 years of Mechanical Engineering experience demonstrating project ownership.
• At least 2 years of experience overseeing an in-progress construction, manufacturing, or assembly/integration process.
• At least 2 years of experience with CAD software.
• Ability to occasionally lift up to 50 lbs and perform typing, standing, stooping, climbing, or sitting for extended periods.
• Ability to work in a facility with heat, cold, noise, fumes, strong magnets, lead, high voltage, high current, pressure systems, and cryogenics.
• Availability for on-site work 5 days per week during relevant assembly operations, with possible first or second shift assignment.

Nice to have

• 6+ years of Mechanical Engineering experience demonstrating project ownership.
• Experience with Siemens NX, lifting operations, welding, piping and tubing construction and joining.
• Experience with highly complex or delicate assemblies, tightly packaged spaces, and fast-paced construction, manufacturing, or assembly/integration builds.
• Experience with composite preparation, layup, and curing; cable, tubing, and bracing alignment and securing.
• Experience with fiber inspection and splicing work and equipment, or heavy component manipulation of large structures.
