TL;DR
Mechanical Engineer - COPVs (All Levels) (Aerospace): Designing, analyzing, building, testing, and integrating flight composite overwrapped pressure vessels and mounting structures for in-space transportation vehicles with an accent on composite materials, structural sizing, manufacturing, and qualification. Focus on developing next-generation high-pressure vessels, automating engineering processes, defining load cases, and supporting hardware from first article build through production and flightworthiness testing.

Location: Redondo Beach, United States; onsite

Salary: $135,000–$215,000 per year

What you will do

  • Design, analyze, build, test, and document composite overwrapped pressure vessels (COPVs) and their mounting structures.
  • Own the hardware roadmap from initial design through production, qualification, and flight integration.
  • Size COPVs for future vehicles and define load cases and environments with loads, dynamics, and thermal engineering teams.
  • Automate development workflows for design, analysis, and documentation.
  • Support first-article builds, manufacturing ramp-up, design-for-manufacturing improvements, and reliability work.
  • Develop structural test plans and collaborate with suppliers, manufacturing, and test teams.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
  • At least 4 years of experience working with composite materials.
  • At least 2 years of experience designing and analyzing COPVs, solid rocket motors, or similar high-pressure structures.
  • Hands-on experience fabricating composite parts and strong knowledge of structural sizing, model validation, mechanics of materials, and material failure modes.
  • Familiarity with metallic and composite manufacturing processes, including machining, forming, lamination, and winding.
  • Applicants must be U.S. Persons or eligible to obtain an applicable U.S. export license under ITAR/EAR regulations.

Nice to have

  • Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
  • Experience with space-flown hardware, spacecraft or launch vehicle development, and COPVs used in ground or space applications.
  • Experience with structural testing, validation, and correlation methods.
  • Experience in a startup or agile development environment.
  • Experience with NX, Teamcenter, Abaqus, or Woundsim.
