Backend Software Engineer (Kotlin)

Salary: $150,000–$200,000 per year plus equity

What you will do

• Design and develop cloud features and subsystems supporting homeowners, installers, fleet operators, utilities, and enterprise partners.
• Build and maintain Kotlin and TypeScript services, secure APIs, and integrations using gRPC, REST, GraphQL, and MQTT.
• Scale cloud and data infrastructure and build Kafka-based event-driven systems for high-volume energy monitoring data.
• Bridge Cloud and Platform engineering on Kubernetes deployment, networking, service reliability, and observability standards.
• Integrate hirify.global hardware, mobile applications, dashboards, third-party hardware partners, payment systems, and subscription billing.
• Collaborate with product, design, firmware, frontend, backend, data, mobile, and systems software engineers while mentoring team members.

Requirements

• 8+ years of backend engineering experience with ownership of projects and features.
• Professional experience with backend programming languages and willingness to work with Kotlin, TypeScript, and Python.
• Deep JVM expertise, including internals, performance tuning, memory management, scaling, upgrades, and technical debt management.
• Strong Apache Kafka experience, including topics, consumer groups, stream processing, and event-driven architectures.
• Hands-on Kubernetes experience with workload debugging, DNS, ingress, service mesh, and deployment architecture.
• Experience with AWS or another cloud-native platform and operating observability systems such as Datadog at scale.

Nice to have

• Experience with IoT products, hardware integrations, mobile applications, B2B enterprise APIs, or partner integrations.
• Knowledge of SQL and NoSQL datastores, gRPC or GraphQL, Pulumi or Terraform, Flink or Spark, and Istio or another service mesh.
• Experience with Spring Boot or Micronaut, app store payments, Stripe billing, or tenant isolation patterns.
