Controller (AI/Biotech)

Location: Emeryville, California, United States; hybrid with 2–3 days on-site

Salary: $185,000–$230,000 USD per year, plus equity participation

What you will do

• Own the full accounting function, including general ledger operations and monthly, quarterly, and annual close.
• Serve as the in-house technical accounting authority and prepare position memos on complex transactions and GAAP updates.
• Lead R&D accounting, including CRO and vendor accruals, prepaids, program-level cost tracking, R&D tax credits, and Section 174 considerations.
• Build financial reporting packages and board-level management presentations for executive leadership and the Board.
• Own equity accounting and plan administration under ASC 718, including stock-based compensation, 409A support, cap table integrity, and disclosures.
• Design internal controls, lead audit readiness, manage tax compliance, evaluate finance technology, and oversee treasury and cash management.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance and an active CPA license.
• 10+ years of progressive accounting experience, including at least 3 years in a Controller or senior accounting leadership role.
• Experience in a pre-IPO or high-growth venture-backed company, preferably in biotech or technology.
• Hands-on NetSuite implementation, migration, or optimization experience, ideally including migration from QuickBooks or a similar legacy system.
• Strong command of U.S. GAAP, technical accounting research, internal control frameworks, and external financial audits.
• Ongoing U.S. work authorization is required; employer sponsorship will not be provided.

Nice to have

• Experience with Carta or similar equity administration platforms and ASC 718 accounting.
• Familiarity with CRO accruals, R&D capitalization policies, and R&D tax credits.
• Experience with procure-to-pay platforms and ERP integrations such as Coupa or Airbase.
• SOC 2 compliance experience.
