TL;DR
Electronics Design Engineer (Quantum Technology): Designing and validating low-noise, high-frequency mixed-signal control and instrumentation hardware for QKD systems with an accent on precision analog design, Altium PCB development, and laboratory measurement. Focus on building repeatable board and firmware validation pipelines, solving noise and error-budget challenges, and integrating hardware with STM32 firmware and Python test automation.

Location: Germany — hybrid, with on-site work in Munich or Potsdam when required

What you will do

  • Own hardware architecture, component selection, schematics, and PCB layout for low-noise, high-frequency analog and mixed-signal systems in Altium.
  • Manage prototypes, vendors, board bring-up, laboratory debugging, rework, and precision/high-frequency validation.
  • Work with Python measurement software and develop STM32 F4/H7 firmware in C with HAL for control, calibration, and integration.
  • Build automated board and firmware test setups using Python and VISA/SCPI instrument control, including repeatable build and validation pipelines.
  • Support manufacturing through production packages, vendor coordination, test fixtures, versioning, and release documentation.
  • Collaborate with optics, FPGA, and software teams on interfaces, calibration, timing, latency, and system integration.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of analog or mixed-signal electronics design experience in R&D or instrumentation, with strong Altium and DFM/DFT skills.
  • Strong knowledge of low-noise signal chains, precision measurements, grounding, shielding, low-leakage layout, and SPICE-class simulation.
  • Experience with precision and high-frequency laboratory measurements, including noise spectral density, frequency response, drift, and temperature dependency.
  • Knowledge of EMC/EMI, safety constraints, design-for-compliance, and precompliance testing.
  • Python experience for laboratory automation and instrument control, plus a Git-centric workflow.
  • Proficiency in written and spoken English, the right to work in Germany, and eligibility for a U.S. Secret or EU SECRET security clearance are required. Visa sponsorship is not provided.

Nice to have

  • STM32 F4/H7, C with HAL, and STM32 bootloader or DFU/OTA update experience.
  • Experience with calibration flows and production test fixtures.
