Manufacturing Engineer – Machining & Automation (Automation)

Location: Research Triangle Park, NC; begins in Durham, NC and is expected to move to Benson, NC after the new facility is completed. Regular production-floor presence is required.

What you will do

• Lead the evaluation, quote comparison, selection, and specification of advanced manufacturing technologies, equipment, and vendors.
• Own equipment design requirements, vendor performance, commissioning, process development, and production qualification for automated machining, grinding, coating, testing, and packaging processes.
• Develop and optimize manufacturing processes by improving throughput, quality, yield, equipment reliability, OEE, and station cycle times.
• Manage technical schedules, budgets, deliverables, equipment reviews, and Factory Acceptance Tests, with less than 10% travel.
• Support production startup, stabilize processes, eliminate bottlenecks, and scale pilot-line processes to full production.
• Develop manufacturing documentation and technical deliverables, including PFMEA, process flows, CAD and electrical/pneumatic drawings, control plans, work instructions, BOMs, maintenance manuals, HMI manuals, vision programs, and MES transaction lists.

Requirements

• Must be a U.S. Person due to access to U.S. export-controlled information or facilities.
• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Automation Engineering, or a related technical discipline, plus 3+ years of experience.
• Hands-on experience creating, modifying, and validating complex equipment assemblies and custom automation layouts in CAD.
• Experience specifying, integrating, or operating heavy automation, robotics, AGVs, advanced vision systems, and industrial laser systems.
• Expert experience developing PFMEAs, control plans, work instructions, process flows, electrical schematics, and pneumatic diagrams.
• Ability to perform core electrical and pneumatic engineering calculations.

Nice to have

• Experience with precision CNC machining, high-volume grinding, or industrial surface coating.
• Machine vision programming experience with tools such as Cognex or Keyence.
• Proficiency with simulation software for automated workflows and line balancing.
• Familiarity with MES implementation and automated transaction mapping.
