Senior Backend Engineer (AI)

Location: Must be based in San Francisco, CA (Hybrid: 3x per week in office)

Salary: $140,000–$172,000 base + bonus + equity

What you will do

• Engineer and iterate real-time voice AI services and agent workflows.
• Design and implement highly-available, low-latency, scalable backend architectures.
• Integrate LLM, ASR, and TTS capabilities into product pipelines.
• Build evaluation frameworks and automated testing for voice quality and agent performance.
• Collaborate across mobile, SDK, and frontend surfaces to ship end-to-end features.
• Adopt AI-native engineering workflows to accelerate development velocity.

Requirements

• Proven track record of owning and delivering critical systems end-to-end.
• Proficiency in at least one backend language (Python, Go, Java, C++, etc.).
• Experience building scalable online services (API design, async workflows, microservices).
• Hands-on experience building products with LLMs, Agents, or workflow automation.
• Strong knowledge of distributed systems fundamentals (databases, caching, messaging).
• Experience with observability practices (logging, monitoring, alerting, tracing).

Nice to have

• Experience with mobile development (iOS/Android/Flutter/React Native).
• SDK development experience with a focus on usability.
• Knowledge of Realtime/Audio technologies like WebRTC or audio streaming.
• Familiarity with Frontend technologies (React/TypeScript).
