Quantum Error Correction Researcher (Algorithms) (Quantum Algorithms/QEC): Researching how quantum algorithms perform on future fault-tolerant quantum computers with an accent on error-correcting codes, hardware architectures, and qubit modalities. Focus on optimising quantum circuit compilation, developing resource and cost models, and exploring co-design across algorithms, QEC schemes, and hardware assumptions.

Location: Cambridge, UK; hybrid

Salary: £60,000–£85,000 per year, depending on experience. Part-time applications may also be considered.

hirify.global develops quantum error correction technology to enable fault-tolerant quantum computing and works with quantum hardware providers and government agencies.

What you will do

  • Research logical operations in quantum error-correcting codes and optimise the compilation of fault-tolerant algorithms.
  • Study how quantum algorithms perform with practical error-correcting codes, hardware architectures, and different qubit modalities.
  • Develop resource and cost models, explore algorithm–QEC–hardware co-design, and investigate QEC primitives.
  • Write code to test scientific ideas and contribute to software-focused research outputs and products.
  • Lead or contribute to small cross-disciplinary projects and collaborate with QEC teams across logical operations, decoding, and code design.
  • Read and review literature, write papers, present at conferences, and build relationships with academic and industry partners.

Requirements

  • PhD with strong academic performance in a mathematically focused discipline such as physics, theoretical chemistry, mathematics, or computer science.
  • Curiosity and motivation to learn technical topics across quantum error correction and quantum algorithms.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively, communicate progress clearly, and contribute to technical problem solving.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Nice to have

  • Experience with quantum algorithms or quantum computing applications.
  • Experience designing and running numerical simulations.
  • Research experience in quantum error correction in academia or industry.
