Robotics Software Engineer (Diagnostics)

Location: San Francisco, CA, United States

Salary: $145,000–$200,000 per year, plus equity.

What you will do

• Design, implement, and maintain a diagnostic framework supporting autonomous and manual diagnostic scans.
• Develop scalable, standardized schemas for fault codes, event logs, status checks, and human-readable health reports.
• Build diagnostic tests for hardware issues, sensor drift and communication failures, battery and motor anomalies, and firmware glitches.
• Collaborate with Infrastructure and Data teams to build pipelines that collect, store, and process diagnostic data from the robot fleet.
• Generate prioritized, contextualized reports that help engineering, manufacturing, and support teams identify root causes quickly.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s or master’s degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Robotics, or a related technical discipline.
• 3+ years of experience developing diagnostics, monitoring, or telemetry systems for robotics, embedded systems, or complex electromechanical devices.
• Professional software development experience with Rust or C++, including robust, testable code for embedded environments or robotics middleware.
• Experience with data structuring, schema design, and ingestion pipelines using message queues, time-series databases, or cloud storage.
• Understanding of robotics hardware and firmware failure modes, including motor control, CAN, I2C, Serial, USB, and power management systems.
• Ability to interpret hardware schematics and low-level system logs to identify failure points.

Nice to have

• Technical triaging experience and familiarity with Ishikawa diagrams.
• Familiarity with S3 or data lake storage.
