Backend Engineer (AI)

Location: San Mateo or New York, United States

Salary: $175,000–$220,000 per year plus equity

What you will do

• Design and build scalable backend services powering the web application and AI platform.
• Develop model and fine-tuning job orchestration, billing, enterprise features, account management, access controls, and governance.
• Build APIs and developer tooling for customers developing on top of AI models.
• Own major product surfaces from architecture through production.
• Improve system reliability, performance, and developer experience.
• Collaborate with product, frontend, infrastructure, go-to-market teams, customers, and AI systems to deliver end-to-end features.

Requirements

• 5+ years of experience solving real-world problems.
• 2+ years of experience working with AI, including agents, bots, chats, or applications built on top of models.
• Comfort collaborating with both people and AI systems.
• Interest in building real products and driving cross-functional initiatives.
• Ability to reason about systems, trade-offs, business impact, developer experience, and clean abstractions.
• Ability to work in San Mateo or New York, United States.
