Building the Experimental Engine for Models of Life (AI)

Location: Onsite at the lab in Palo Alto, California, United States. Collaboration requires meetings starting at 7am PT, with travel several times per year for retreats and business events.

Compensation: $221K–$305K per year plus bonus and equity.

What you will do

• Define experimental strategies that close gaps in model understanding and therapeutic design performance.
• Design experiments to train and evaluate generative and predictive models in collaboration with biology and machine learning experts.
• Generate high-quality, model-ready data through functional genomics, high-throughput screening, multi-omics, and phenotypic profiling.
• Integrate assay development, laboratory automation, data generation, analysis, and interpretation into a scalable experimental platform.
• Recruit and lead a multidisciplinary team of experimental scientists and technology builders.

Requirements

• Outstanding record of innovation in scalable biological assays advancing therapeutic discovery, molecular design, or functional genomics.
• Deep understanding of experimental design, measurement quality, and biological context in relation to model learning.
• Excellent cross-disciplinary communication and ability to analyze and visualize complex biological data.
• Availability to work with US and European teams, including meetings starting at 7am PT.
• Expectation to work in person at the Palo Alto lab location.

Nice to have

• Leadership of a research team of 10 or more scientists.
• Hands-on experience in mammalian cell engineering, RNA biology, and biochemistry.
• Experience with laboratory automation for scaling data generation.
• Development of data-rich in vivo assays using pooled libraries, single-cell analysis, or spatial profiling.
