Location: San Francisco Bay Area; on-site

Salary: $120,000–$215,000 per year plus equity

What you will do

  • Design and implement protein engineering strategies including rational design, computational modeling, directed evolution, and combinatorial libraries.
  • Build and characterize protein variants through scalable, high-throughput workflows covering library generation, expression, and custom assays.
  • Collaborate with computational, biochemical, structural biology, and data science specialists to connect protein sequences and structures with function.
  • Investigate complex biomolecules and translate mechanistic insights into designs for dynamic molecular systems.
  • Develop screening and validation methods that accelerate the design-build-iterate cycle and support transition toward in vivo applications.

Requirements

  • PhD in bioengineering, biophysics, biochemistry, or a related field, or equivalent experience leading research projects end-to-end.
  • Proficiency in library construction, protein expression in mammalian cells, and standard protein characterization.
  • Comfort with computational approaches to protein engineering and understanding of their fundamental principles.
  • Mechanistic thinking and ability to understand how complex biomolecules function.
  • Strong collaboration and communication skills across scientific and technical disciplines.

Nice to have

  • Experience engineering multi-state proteins, membrane proteins, or multi-component protein assemblies.
  • Experience expressing proteins in primary neurons, brain organoids, or brain tissue.
  • Experience with large-scale screening and creative assay development.
  • Familiarity with machine learning or data-driven protein design.
