Computational Design of Biological Experiments for Model Development (AI): Designing computational and biological experiments to evaluate foundation models for therapeutic design with an accent on high-throughput biological data, statistical rigor, and model behavior. Focus on building meaningful benchmarks, identifying dataset artifacts and bias, and translating biological hypotheses into measurable machine learning experiments.

Location: Palo Alto, CA; candidates are expected to primarily work from office locations. Availability is required for meetings starting at 8am PT and ending at 7pm CET, with travel several times a year for retreats and business events.

Compensation: $135K–$240K + bonus + equity.

What you will do

  • Investigate how data quantity, quality, composition, and training methods affect biological foundation model performance.
  • Develop biologically meaningful evaluations and benchmarks for therapeutic design objectives.
  • Design and execute in silico and laboratory studies to analyze model behavior, capabilities, limitations, and learned biological signals.
  • Identify biological datasets and build computational pipelines for preprocessing, quality control, and exploratory analysis.
  • Analyze high-throughput sequencing and functional genomics data, identifying artifacts, bias, and noise.
  • Collaborate with biologists, AI researchers, and engineers to prioritize experiments, data collection, and model improvements.

Requirements

  • PhD in computational biology, statistics, physics, machine learning, or a related quantitative discipline, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Strong quantitative reasoning, statistical intuition, and ability to design rigorous investigations using complex biological data.
  • Experience analyzing high-throughput sequencing data such as RNA-seq, functional genomics, transcriptomics, or MPRA.
  • Experience collaborating with AI or machine learning researchers or applying machine learning and generative AI to scientific problems.
  • Familiarity with generative foundation models, representation learning, model evaluation, and public biological datasets.
  • Proficiency in Python and common scientific computing libraries, with excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Nice to have

  • 3+ years of post-PhD experience in computational biology, biostatistics, machine learning research, or a related field.
  • Publications or open-source tooling in relevant quantitative fields.
