What you will do

• Develop robust head-media interface designs for magnetic recording media used in hard disk drives.
• Improve hard disk sputtering processes to reduce defects and increase manufacturing yield.
• Optimize magnetic areal density by reducing head-media spacing while maintaining reliability and performance.
• Test and validate recording media designs against product specifications and industry standards.
• Analyze manufacturing data and performance metrics, identify optimization opportunities, and implement corrective actions.
• Support the transition of new designs from development into high-volume production, focusing on manufacturability and cost-effectiveness.

Requirements

• Master’s or PhD degree in Materials Science, Chemistry, Physics, or a related engineering field.
• 15+ years of engineering development or R&D experience with magnetic recording media for hard disk drive applications.
• In-depth knowledge of hard disk carbon overcoat and lubricant processes and reliability testing methodologies.
• Strong knowledge of vacuum technology, including physical vapor deposition and chemical vapor deposition.
• Experience designing and optimizing head-media interfaces for high-volume manufacturing.
• Strong analytical, problem-solving, technical documentation, presentation, and cross-functional collaboration skills.

Nice to have

• Experience operating disk sputter equipment, preferably ANELVA deposition tools.
• Quality engineering knowledge and experience with defect mitigation strategies.
• Experience leading collaboration across manufacturing, quality assurance, and product engineering.
• Project management experience driving innovation and process improvements.
