Senior Automation Engineer (Semiconductor Automation)

Location: Onsite at the Penang SDSM Office in Batu Kawan, Penang, Malaysia

What you will do

• Design, develop, and implement hardware-based automation solutions for high-volume NAND flash SIP and SSD assembly/test operations.
• Lead automation projects from requirements gathering and feasibility studies through vendor selection, design review, installation, qualification, and production release.
• Integrate tools and subsystems with factory automation infrastructure, including SECS/GEM, E84, and AMHS interfaces.
• Manage equipment hardware upgrades, retrofits, automation enhancements, and control-system improvements.
• Collaborate with equipment engineering, process engineering, IT, manufacturing teams, vendors, and other stakeholders.
• Troubleshoot sensors, communication errors, equipment interfaces, and other automation issues while maintaining safety, quality, and factory standards.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, Automation Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.
• Approximately 5 years of experience in semiconductor manufacturing, equipment engineering, or factory automation.
• Strong knowledge of sensors, actuators, PLCs, motion control, robotics, industrial communication protocols, and equipment control logic.
• Hands-on experience with SECS/GEM, E84, AMHS, and equipment integration standards used in semiconductor fabs.
• Experience with project planning, scheduling, vendor management, and cross-functional coordination.
• Experience with cleanroom environments, MES or factory control systems, and semiconductor equipment safety standards.

Nice to have

• Robotics integration, end-effectors, and automated handling systems experience.
• Mechanical design experience with custom-built automation equipment.
• PC and PLC programming experience with Siemens, Omron, Mitsubishi, or similar systems.
