Staff Software Engineer (AI)

Location: Seattle, WA preferred; McLean, VA; or remote within the USA. Some travel to customers may be required.

Salary: $180,000–$240,000 per year.

What you will do

• Work directly with customers to understand workflows, pain points, data environments, and operational constraints.
• Build reusable core-platform capabilities alongside customer-specific integrations and deployments.
• Develop AI-enabled applications, agents, and workflow automation using RAG, guardrails, and evaluations.
• Own delivery from prototype through production, including architecture, backend services, APIs, integrations, observability, testing, deployment, and customer acceptance.
• Integrate customer systems, data sources, identity providers, and cloud or on-premises infrastructure.
• Set technical direction, make architecture decisions, debug deployed systems, and collaborate with product, engineering, security, and customer teams.

Requirements

• 8+ years of software engineering experience building and shipping production-quality systems.
• Experience applying AI and ML techniques, including LLM-based approaches such as RAG, guardrails, and evaluations, to customer problems.
• Experience with scalable system design, backend engineering, distributed systems, APIs, data pipelines, cloud infrastructure, or applied AI/ML systems.
• Ability to work across backend services, frontend interfaces, infrastructure, integrations, and deployment workflows.
• Ability to translate ambiguous requirements into working software and communicate with engineers, product teams, executives, and customer stakeholders.
• Strong debugging skills across application code, data, infrastructure, networking, and customer systems.

Nice to have

• Experience as a full-stack or backend engineer, forward-deployed engineer, solutions engineer, product engineer, platform engineer, or startup engineer.
• Experience with AI agents, LLM applications, workflow orchestration, retrieval systems, model deployment, or evaluations and guardrails.
• Experience with AWS, Azure, or GCP; Kubernetes, Terraform, Docker, CI/CD, and observability.
• Familiarity with identity and access management, audit logging, data governance, compliance, and secure software delivery.
