TL;DR
Foundational AI Engineer (LLM/Agentic Automation): Building production AI systems and scalable backend services for automated tax workflows with an accent on tool-calling agents, model orchestration, MCP-style integrations, and RAG. Focus on designing reliable architectures that balance latency, cost, and iteration speed while operating AI infrastructure and customer-facing APIs.
Location: New York, hybrid
Salary: $175,000–$300,000 annually, plus equity

What you will do
- Design, build, and operate production AI systems, including tool-calling agents, model orchestration layers, and RAG.
- Implement AI integrations with modern frameworks, MCP servers, and external model providers.
- Build and evolve scalable backend services and APIs for automated workflows and customer-facing features.
- Design automation systems using workflow tools, agentic approaches, and internal tooling.
- Make architectural decisions balancing latency, cost, reliability, and iteration speed.
- Own infrastructure, observability, performance, AI safety, and reliability practices across AI and non-AI services.
Requirements
- 7+ years of experience building products in high-growth environments.
- 2+ years of experience building with LLMs.
- Hands-on use of AI development tools such as Cursor and Claude Code.
- Backend experience with PostgreSQL, Redis, and cloud services, preferably AWS.
- Frontend development experience with TypeScript and its ecosystem.
- Strong product sense, communication, collaboration, and ownership in a dynamic startup environment.
Nice to have
- Experience in payments, tax, accounting, or regulatory technology.
- Experience with n8n, Zapier-style systems, workflow engines, or internal automation platforms.
- Familiarity with MCPs, tool calls, agent frameworks, or model orchestration patterns.
- Understanding of vector databases and concepts such as Pinecone and HNSW.
