TL;DR
Chemical Engineer (Nuclear) (HTGRs/thermal-hydraulics): Developing and integrating chemical, thermal-hydraulic, and process systems for high-temperature gas-cooled reactors with an accent on thermal-fluid modeling, heat and mass balance analysis, and high-temperature materials behavior. Focus on designing reactor system components, validating steady-state and transient models, integrating helium power cycles and hydrogen production systems, and supporting NRC and ASME-compliant safety analyses.

Location: Gaithersburg, Maryland, United States; 4 days per week in office. Travel up to 10% as needed. Working hours are 8:00am–5:00pm, Monday–Friday.

Salary: $100,000–$140,000 per year.

Company

hirify.global develops high-temperature gas-cooled reactor systems and related nuclear technologies.

What you will do

  • Develop, validate, and integrate thermal-hydraulic and process models for HTGR cores, secondary systems, and balance-of-plant systems using ASPEN, COMSOL, and other simulation platforms.
  • Perform steady-state and transient heat and mass balance analyses, including load-following and accident scenarios.
  • Integrate chemical engineering principles into helium Brayton and Rankine cycles, heat exchanger networks, hydrogen production, tritium control, and off-gas systems.
  • Evaluate oxidation, corrosion, and creep behavior of alloys, graphite, and reactor-grade materials under HTGR conditions.
  • Specify, size, and assess components including recuperators, compressors, turbomachinery, and helium circulators; execute or review CFD and FEA analyses.
  • Coordinate engineering activities, support design reviews and customer evaluations, and contribute to operational strategies, licensing, quality assurance, technical reports, and safety analyses.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering or a related field from an accredited institution.
  • Typically five years of experience in chemical engineering; a relevant master’s or Ph.D. may substitute for part of the experience requirement.
  • Proficiency with process simulation software such as Aspen Plus, HYSYS, or ChemCAD.
  • Knowledge of industry standards and safety regulations, including OSHA and EPA requirements.
  • Ability to work four days per week in the office in Gaithersburg, Maryland and perform the role with minimal supervision.

Nice to have

  • Experience working in the nuclear industry.

Culture & Benefits

  • Full-time exempt employment with a comprehensive benefits package.
  • 401(k) plan with employer match.
  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance.
