TL;DR
Staff Robotics Software Engineer (Robotics) (C/C++): Leading the architecture and development of embedded firmware for custom automation robots that pick and pack online grocery orders with an accent on motion control, hardware communication, and safe service interfaces. Focus on designing firmware across ARM microcontrollers and Linux SBCs, building HIL testing environments, and integrating hardware, middleware, and application layers.

Location: Mountain View, California; must be located within commuting distance

Salary: $180,000–$215,000 per year, plus stock and benefits

Company

hirify.global develops custom automation robotics systems that pick and pack online orders of groceries and other consumables while reducing waste and emissions in the food supply chain.

What you will do

  • Lead the architecture and development of embedded firmware systems from concept through production.
  • Design communication layers spanning CAN, I2C, Modbus, UART, SPI, gRPC, and Protocol Buffers.
  • Develop portable C/C++ firmware for ARM-based microcontrollers and Linux-based single-board computers.
  • Implement motor control, encoder-based positioning, trajectory optimization, jerk limiting, and motion sequencing.
  • Build unit-testing and HIL environments, debug firmware and hardware interfaces, and perform hardware bring-up.
  • Own hardware, middleware, and application interface boundaries while mentoring engineers and documenting firmware APIs and integration guides.

Requirements

  • 8+ years of embedded systems firmware development and architecture experience.
  • Deep knowledge of CAN bus, Modbus, I2C, SPI, and UART.
  • Strong C and C++ skills, with experience in embedded Linux, shell scripting, and build systems such as Bazel or CMake.
  • Experience with motion control, motor tuning, encoder feedback, trajectory optimization, and gRPC/Protobuf interfaces.
  • Experience leading unit-testing strategies, building HIL environments, and working with electrical engineering teams during hardware bring-up.
  • Proficiency with oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, multimeters, and similar hardware debugging tools.

Nice to have

  • Experience with CANopen, PLCs, ladder logic, or industrial automation frameworks.
  • Background in robotics, industrial automation, or distributed systems.
  • Experience with bootloaders, OTA updates, secure firmware deployment, Ethernet, MQTT, or TCP/IP.
  • Exposure to firmware DevOps practices, artifact management, and CI/CD pipelines.
  • Robotics competition, maker, tinkering, or hardware-hacking experience.

Culture & Benefits

  • Autonomy and ownership across design, implementation, and operation.
  • Close collaboration with mechanical design, software, computer vision, systems integration, and operations teams.
  • Inclusive, balanced, and highly collaborative work environment.
  • Medical, dental, vision, 401(k), life, and disability coverage.
  • Paid time off with an emphasis on maintaining work-life balance.
  • Stock participation and the opportunity to influence a rapidly growing startup's technology direction.
