TL;DR
Software Engineer (Computational Mechanics): Building and optimizing nonlinear solid-mechanics solvers and simulation software for thermal, fluid-flow, and structural-mechanics applications with an accent on finite element methods, sparse linear algebra, and GPU execution. Focus on implementing large-deformation and history-dependent material models, improving solver convergence, and profiling high-performance code on modern hardware.

Location: Hybrid, Palo Alto HQ, United States

Salary: $190,000–$230,000 per year, plus equity participation

Company

hirify.global4d develops simulation software for thermal, fluid-flow, and structural-mechanics applications used by engineers.

What you will do

  • Develop and tune nonlinear solvers for geometric and material nonlinearity in solid mechanics.
  • Build iterative linear solvers and preconditioners for large sparse systems.
  • Port and optimize solvers for GPU execution using CUDA, HIP, SYCL, or equivalent frameworks.
  • Implement finite-element discretizations for structural and thermomechanical simulations.
  • Profile and benchmark solver performance, identifying and removing bottlenecks.
  • Contribute to version control, automated testing, CI/CD, and code review practices while collaborating with physicists, engineers, and software developers.

Requirements

  • 3–6 years of industry or research experience in computational mechanics, scientific computing, computational physics, numerical simulation, or HPC.
  • Hands-on experience with geometric and material nonlinearity, large-deformation kinematics, nonlinear constitutive models, and Newton-type methods.
  • Strong foundation in the finite element method for solid and structural mechanics.
  • Experience implementing iterative linear solvers and preconditioning techniques for large sparse systems.
  • Proven GPU programming experience and proficiency in C++ and/or Python.
  • Strong software engineering practices, including Git, automated testing, CI/CD, and code review.

Nice to have

  • Experience with warpage and residual-stress problems in semiconductor manufacturing.
  • Familiarity with matrix-free methods, geometric multigrid, adaptive mesh refinement, or embedded geometry methods.
  • Experience applying machine learning to solid mechanics.
  • Experience with Nsight, VTune, or Roofline performance analysis.

Culture & Benefits

  • Work on technically challenging problems with engineering impact.
  • Join a small, collaborative team where contributions are visible.
  • Receive competitive compensation with equity participation.
  • Work in a flexible environment and help build the software platform from the ground up.
