Staff Software Engineer (Cybersecurity)

Location: 100% remote in the United States; hybrid work is available for candidates based in the Chicago, IL or El Dorado Hills, CA metro areas

What you will do

• Rapidly design and build functional software for new product concepts, technical experiments, and strategic initiatives.
• Turn loosely defined ideas into working applications, services, integrations, and prototypes.
• Define architecture and technical direction while balancing speed, security, and scalability.
• Develop Java backend services and APIs, plus modern web experiences with JavaScript, TypeScript, and React.
• Evaluate unfamiliar technologies and integrate AI models, APIs, and emerging AI capabilities where appropriate.
• Validate technical risks and feasibility, document solutions, mentor engineers, and hand successful concepts to product engineering teams.

Requirements

• 9+ years of professional software engineering experience across multiple areas of software development.
• Strong experience designing complete applications, backend services, APIs, databases, integrations, and service-oriented architectures.
• Strong Java backend development experience and experience with JavaScript or TypeScript and React or similar frameworks.
• Ability to independently take ambiguous ideas from concept through implementation and make pragmatic technical tradeoffs.
• Experience leading architecture, debugging unfamiliar systems, learning new technologies quickly, and influencing technical direction.
• Experience using AI-assisted development tools and mentoring engineers without formal people-management authority.

Nice to have

• Experience with Python or Rust.
• Experience integrating large language models, AI APIs, agents, or AI-enabled workflows.
• Background in hackathons, open-source projects, technical side projects, startups, innovation labs, or prototyping teams.
• Experience building cybersecurity, developer tooling, desktop, infrastructure, or platform products.
