TL;DR
Field Optimization Engineers (Robotics) (Autonomous Machines): Improving autonomy for dozing, excavation, loading, and other real-world jobsites with an accent on field performance, testing, and AI feedback. Focus on diagnosing failure modes, validating safety and control behaviors under operational stress, and translating field observations into planning and engineering improvements.

Location: Remote; approximately 40–70% international and domestic travel, including customer sites in the US, Australia, Africa, and Europe.

What you will do

  • Tune autonomy behaviors for dozing, excavation, loading, and other operational tasks across varied environments.
  • Analyze autonomy performance metrics, failure modes, error distributions, edge cases, and operational data.
  • Design and execute functional, performance, environmental, regression, and safety tests on customer sites.
  • Validate releases, patches, hardware revisions, autonomy updates, telemetry reliability, and degraded-mode behavior under real operational stress.
  • Translate field observations into actionable inputs for AI, planning, autonomy, software, and hardware teams.
  • Build scripts, integrations, custom workflows, customer data APIs, cloud ingestion, and operator UI improvements when needed.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Computer, Robotics, or Systems Engineering, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 5+ years of experience in field engineering, systems engineering, SDE/SDE-T, robotics deployment, industrial automation, or test and validation engineering.
  • Hands-on experience debugging complex hardware and software systems under real-world constraints.
  • Strong scripting ability in Python, Bash, JavaScript, or an equivalent language, with the ability to write production-quality scripts or small features.
  • Understanding of sensors, networking, Linux systems, compute modules, and embedded hardware fundamentals.
  • Experience designing and executing test plans, reporting structured quality findings, and communicating field issues as clear engineering requirements.

Nice to have

  • Experience deploying robotics, autonomous systems, heavy equipment, or industrial automation.
  • Experience with safety-critical systems, emergency stops, lockout/tagout, or functional safety frameworks.
  • Familiarity with hydraulics, GNSS systems, perception stacks, or motion control systems.
  • Experience with test automation, CI test harnesses, validation pipelines, service manuals, installation guides, or field engineering playbooks.
  • OEM or dealer network experience, including Komatsu, Caterpillar, or Volvo.
