Director of Development (Data Platforms)

Location: Boston, MA, United States

Salary: $222,000–$272,000 USD annual base compensation, plus a discretionary annual variable target incentive.

What you will do

• Lead innovation and execution for the Data Models engineering team and core IRIS platform architecture initiatives.
• Drive technical and organizational improvements from concept through implementation, adoption, measurement, and ownership delegation.
• Modernize architecture to improve performance, scalability, concurrency, maintainability, and operational flexibility.
• Guide initiatives involving persistent data structures, SQL query planning, vector search, ANN indexes, micro-partitioning, and unified row/columnar planning.
• Build partnerships across engineering, product management, infrastructure, and platform teams.
• Mentor engineering leaders and individual contributors while improving delegation, documentation, and organizational execution.

Requirements

• 15+ years of software engineering experience, including significant leadership of large-scale platform or infrastructure teams.
• Strong background in database systems, distributed systems, storage engines, query optimization, or platform architecture.
• Experience leading architectural modernization and large technical transformation initiatives.
• Ability to combine strategic leadership with deep technical engagement.
• Demonstrated success building high-performing engineering cultures focused on accountability, quality, and continuous improvement.
• Degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics, or a similar field.

Nice to have

• Experience with cloud-native systems, scalability models, and modern software delivery practices.
• Familiarity with AI-assisted software development workflows and automation frameworks.
