Backend Engineer (AI)

Location: Mountain View, California, United States; hybrid setup with a minimum of three days in the office per week

Salary: $180,000–$275,000 annual cash compensation, with potential equity

What you will do

• Develop and own core backend services and system components that are fast, reliable, and scalable.
• Design and scale document-ingestion systems that support question-answering and agent workflows.
• Help scale in-house question-answering models and retrieval systems while reducing latency and maintaining engineering quality.
• Develop expert-level agentic workflows that automate comprehensive knowledge work.
• Establish engineering best practices across the product, backend, and ML stack.
• Turn ambiguous business and product problems into extensible systems that support rapid iteration and changing user needs.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.
• 5+ years of experience in the technology industry.
• Proactive approach with strong ownership and initiative.
• Ability to iterate quickly based on user engagement.
• Experience with backend or distributed systems, data, indexing, or search systems at scale.
• Strong understanding of scalable, high-performance engineering practices.
