Software Engineer (AI)

Location: Hybrid in Columbia, Maryland, United States; average of 1–2 days per week in the Columbia office. U.S. Citizenship and an active Secret U.S. Government Security Clearance are required.

Salary: $111,662–$145,000 per year.

What you will do

• Design, develop, and implement complex Java-based software capabilities for computer-based systems.
• Develop enterprise APIs, RESTful web services, and microservices.
• Integrate Claude Code or Gemini agentic workflows into daily software engineering activities.
• Use autonomous agents for multi-file feature implementation, codebase refactoring, and automated unit and integration test generation.
• Guide AI agents through multi-repository architectures and audit generated code for security, performance, and architectural alignment.
• Collaborate with engineers in a fast-paced small-business environment, troubleshoot issues, meet multiple deadlines, and track emerging software technologies.

Requirements

• Must currently hold and maintain an active Secret U.S. Government Security Clearance and be a U.S. Citizen.
• 5+ years of software engineering experience with modern Java frameworks and libraries such as Spring or Guava; alternatively, 3 years of relevant experience with a related master’s degree, or a high school diploma/equivalent with 9 years of relevant experience.
• Experience designing enterprise APIs, RESTful web services, microservices architecture, and object-oriented programming.
• Experience with the agile software lifecycle and configuration management tools such as Git, Nexus, or Maven.
• Experience with the Linux operating system.
• Strong troubleshooting, testing, responsiveness, inquisitiveness, and ability to work under pressure with multiple deadlines.
• Ability to learn quickly and work independently and in a team setting.
• Ability to work in a hybrid environment with 1–2 office days per week and adapt to schedule changes.
• Experience integrating advanced AI coding agents, specifically Claude Code or Google’s Antigravity/Gemini agentic workflows, into daily software engineering routines.
• Experience using autonomous agents for multi-file feature delivery, complex refactoring, and automated test generation.
• Ability to manage context across complex, multi-repository application architectures and critically audit agent-generated code.

Nice to have

• Experience using Claude Code or Gemini in daily engineering workflows and for agentic feature delivery.
• Experience with cloud technologies such as AWS or Azure.
• Experience with distributed databases, NoSQL databases, and full-text search engines such as Elasticsearch, MongoDB, or Solr.
• Scripting experience.
• Familiarity with data lakes or data warehouses.
• Understanding of Agile methodologies and standard development tools such as JIRA, Confluence, or GitHub Enterprise.
