TL;DR
Senior Engineer, Mechanical Engineering- CA (Implantable Neuroelectronics): Designing and developing implantable neuroelectronic devices from mechanical architecture through verification and production with an accent on miniaturization, hermetic packaging, biocompatibility, and manufacturability. Focus on defining mechanical interfaces, developing precision assembly and sealing processes, supporting ISO and FDA design controls, and solving cross-functional integration challenges in safety-critical systems.

Location: San Diego, CA, US — on-site

Salary: $140,000–$160,000 annually, with potential discretionary bonuses and/or equity grants.

Company

hirify.global develops non-surgical brain–computer interfaces and implantable neuroelectronics designed to restore communication and autonomy for people with paralysis and cognitive decline.

What you will do

  • Own the end-to-end mechanical design and architecture of implantable devices, including enclosures, feedthroughs, internal packaging, and structural interfaces.
  • Lead miniaturization strategies, trade studies, design reviews, and mechanical interface control documentation.
  • Design and validate hermetic encapsulation and sealing approaches using laser welding, brazing, and glass-to-metal seals.
  • Develop precision bonding, micro-assembly, clean-room, DFM, and DFA processes with contract manufacturing partners.
  • Lead mechanical activities within design controls, including risk analyses, verification and validation protocols, test reports, and traceability documentation.
  • Collaborate with electrical, firmware, systems, biocompatibility, quality, and delivery-system engineering teams on integration and failure investigations.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, biomedical engineering, or a related discipline.
  • 5+ years of experience designing miniaturized, high-reliability electromechanical systems.
  • Expertise in hermetic packaging, precision assembly, and biocompatible materials.
  • Proficiency with 3D CAD, such as SolidWorks, plus GD&T, tolerance stack-up analysis, and mechanical drawing standards.
  • Hands-on experience taking mechanical subsystems from prototyping through design verification and production.
  • Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.

Nice to have

  • Experience with active implantable medical devices, such as neurostimulators, cochlear implants, or cardiac rhythm devices.
  • Experience with thermal management of implantable electronics and hermetic sealing technologies.
  • Familiarity with ISO 14708, IEC 60601, and FDA guidance for implantable devices.
  • Experience supporting IDE, PMA, or 510(k) regulatory submissions.
  • Experience working in cross-functional hardware teams at a startup or high-growth company.

Culture & Benefits

  • Full-time, exempt W-2 employment in the US.
  • Subsidized medical and dental insurance for employees and dependents.
  • Life insurance and short- and long-term disability coverage.
  • 401(k), flexible spending account, commuter benefits for New York employees, and discretionary unlimited PTO.
  • Work on safety-critical implantable systems at the intersection of healthcare and technology.
